Aceldama

He was the One
yet one of twelve dealt a blow
one washed his hands
eleven followed faithfully
Satan tossed coin and As was heads*
Ace high at the supper table
brought low by greater love of silver
a potters’ bloody field for Calvary

Notes:
Aceldama – tr. field of blood – area of Jerusalem bought with Judas’ ‘blood money’. It had been a rich red clay field previously utilised by potters
‘As’ – Roman coinage from which ace is derived

A play on words in 44 for De’s quadrille prompt: Ace of poems

  1. Seems satan won that hand but not the game. Intriguing take on ace/aceldama…a word I’d never heard before.
