"High purposed we shall traverse realm on realm,
cleaving to none as to a home,
the world of spirit wishes not to fetter us
but raise us higher, step by step. "
Hermann Hesse ~ Steps
Clambered up these stone steps on a recent walk from Edgcumbe to Cawsand in Cornwall. Only now, fully rested and respired, can I appreciate how enticing they look in their mossy woodland setting – and somewhat apt too as I move onward and upward this week into a new home, not far from my current abode. Am starting to feel like a hermit crab, swapping houses like empty shells.

Excellent! Those look like sturdy yet steep steps!

I might get up them but I doubt I’d get down! For some reason I have suddenly found myself freezing when faced with a steep drop (and no hand rail). A lovely photo. And I wish you a smooth transition into your new home.

Thank you Jude – The other side had a rail I think! Am moving into a cottage with steep stairs & bannister rail so this was good practice

Ah, we reluctantly had to pass on houses with steep stairs or narrow ones. We like cottages, but have come to realise that they are lovely for a holiday but not a permanent home.

I agree but will be in hermit crab mode for the foreseeable future!

I should imagine that they’re pretty slick when they’re wet.

whatever the weather we must watch our step!

They’re the sort of thing that I didn’t bother about until my accident in the spring. Now I’m a lot more cautious.

yes I know about falls and the breakages which make us cautious – hope you are mending

Thanks Laura. There’s still a way to go with the right shoulder but the restrictions on what I can do are getting less.

Looking at those steps just gets my feet to itching — need some hills to climb, some vales to descend into. Life on flat land is too easy for a lazy heart.

I’m on it. I have posted a couple. I’ll let you know if I make this line into anything worthwhile.
