Isolation #16

There is a Jewish tradition that after visiting the grave of a loved one or respected member of the community, a stone is left there. Conversely I have taken to collecting one smallish stone for each walk I take during these times of isolation and bringing it home. Not any old stone but one that catches my eye and that means being spontaneous as I am a bit of a magpie when it comes to seeing the beauty in stones.

Taking this one step further I’m now teaching myself a bit about Geology with David Rothery’s book (Geology: A Complete Introduction) but I never want to lose what the Japanese call Suiseki -stone appreciation – seeing in them aspects of stability, longevity and immortality.

The stone featured above is an old pillar for a long-gone gated entrance- the other pillar is here also, at the regulatory 6′ distance too!. Both have withstood the test of time and are showing their age beautifully.

For as long as I'm well, am posting a pic a day to enhance these Covid-19 times of isolation and lockdown

  1. Thank you for introducing me to Suiseki. It is like the treasure hunt a 7-10 year old would undertake…collecting shells and especially sand dollars, bringing home autumn leaves, and gathering wild flowers in the summer. It is a delight to regress to such a young age as I journey out of the house.
