Context

Back to the cold months
my negativity hangs
heavy as festive decor

times were though when warmth
went unwelcomed
when it blemished like a curse
neck up, in a Rudolfesque glow

how I wished then for wintry draughts
for frost to staunch a maiden's blush
to pass unseen in some
blinding blizzard

Just 44 words for Lisa’s quadrille prompt: warm

  1. I haven’t blushed in a long time…perhaps I’m too old for that kind of warmth. But you describe it so well. (K)

  2. Beautifully penned! ‘Rudolfesque glow’ is such a nice phrase. I like how you navigated your thoughts and feelings, with such finesse, from summer to winter.

  3. I really enjoy the imagery of the first stanza, the negativity and heaviness of festivities. Plus the overall theme of be careful what you wish for, is one of my favorites.

  4. Laura, I love your sumptuous cornucopia of poetic devices here. Had to go to the list and found: alliteration, assonance, chiasmus, consonance, enjambment, myth, and simile. I’m sure there are probably some I missed. Yet they sit so pretty within the context your poem. Lovely!!!!! ❤

    1. Lisa your words should rightfully be framed – not only seeing but naming all those devices I am only vaguely aware of – your prompt brought it all out!

  5. How that blush rages back again, later.
    Following, for more impressive poetry.

  6. Oh, I can see the blinking blush from here. This poem conjures steamy remembrances and the time when fires were put out more carelessly. Lasting images, this one.
