Like seasoned foragers, some dead and famous poets
already picked the choicest words
for this august off-summer spectacle
And lyricists in enigmatic haiku code
condense by strictest syllable
petiole patterns on pond and path
We too have walked those fiery forests
entranced, and felt the spectral touch
of Fall before the mould sets in
So who amongst us is not moved
to eulogise, intoning vows
to fix such images in amber
Strong colours and fierce brushwork;
more than sixty harvests reaped and gleaned
– still Autumn leaves me speechless
For Punam’s Poetics prompt “Fall (in) love” with a heart felt ode to Autumn
Yes, autumn never ceases to amaze. Well said, Laura.
thank you Sandy
My pleasure.
This is gorgeously written, Laura! Wow 😍 I love the nod to poets who have passed and lyricists who engage in enigmatic haiku code. Yes, no doubt Autumn leaves one speechless … as does your poem. 💖💖
❤ Sanaa – always so generous with your comments
Exactly, we have done it over and over, yet the autumn can be praised yet again.
Love the petiole patterns on pond and path
that alliterative line just popped into my head
Not only dead and famous poets, but also punters at the dVerse Poets Pub have ‘already picked the choicest words’ for autumn, Laura, and yet we return to it every year, writing about ‘the spectral touch of Fall before the mould sets in’ and ‘images in amber’. You may feel speechless, but you have the words.
the words never seem to capture – neither does the camera but we must be content to try and get close, so thank you Kim
You’re welcome, Laura.
“petiole patterns on pond and path” love it.
Laura, you leave me speechless with your uniquely creative take. Just wonderful.
a wonderful prompt as we all experience the spectacle -so thank you for hosting this
Fiery forests…perfect, yes…and what a start..what a start to a verse ….lovely…a very geerous poem, invoking the words we readers have surely used, loveéy tone, love this one. Quite moved by thoughts brought about..
Ain your words are always so poetic, evocative – many thanks – and I do try to reciprocate but struggle sometimes signing in
your alliteration here is very good
many thanks – my poems are frequently peppered with such though not premeditated
Nice use of “petiole” and I love that ending.
a change from leaf- thank you Maria
A fine speech for one left speechless! Thanks for the new word “petiole.”
thank you Sean – it’s so hard not to go OTT on Autumn/Fall –
perfection! xx
❤
yes, and especially to your wry first stanza ~
it seems that way whenever I read the poets
You touch on a problem that many artists feel – that it has all been done before – but each of our lives is unique and so is the way we see the world, and you found plenty to say for one rendered speechless, Laura – a great write…
thank you – what you say is so valid though the ‘greats’ still make me hesitate to utter my own words,
My goodness! This is a masterpiece! We are speechless yet verbose, and your poem captures in raptures that meaningful theme.
I am almost speechless with your praise except to say a heartfelt thankyou
❤️❤️❤️
It’s a fine tribute to autumn, so unique, Laura. Excellent.
