Out of the mist of the eponymous noir, they called me -
Laura
enchantment sung to a haunting tune -
siren
botany borne as Laurus Nobilis -
victor
laurel crowned, school Latin wove the lure -
adept
plucked from Apollo's grasp, I'm simply Daphne -
ditto*
- the naiad Daphne pursued by Apollo changed into a bay laurel tree (Laurus Nobilis) from which Laura is derived. The foliage in Greco Roman times was worn as a circlet depicting honourable, victorious status
Since today is ‘Learn what your name means’ day, my MTB prompt “The Poetry of Names” is the short and sweet “WaltMarie” poetry style. Even lines of 2 syllables can be read as a mini verse (I did not quite manage that!).
And that is how it’s done, Laura! Such a beautiful WaltMarie! I especially love ‘enchantment sung to a haunting tune’.
to be honest Kim its only 10 lines but not as easy as I thought at first so thank you
My pleasure, Laura.
How charmingly you make us see the romance of your name! A wonderfully effective use of the form, Laura.
thank you Dora
This has the feeling of a classical Greek verse, greatly aided vy the subtle hints, but also in its own right…
a mix of 40s film noir and lyrics with Greco Roman mythology – what an outcome!
So much explained in just 10 lines, Laura! I really liked it!
thank you Carol – that was half the challenge!
Educational and aesthetic exposition. Laura is a verdant name for sure.
many thanks Li!
You’re very welcome.
Now I’m singing that song. I had forgotten the relation to Daphne. Names are so evocative. (K)
singalong with me then Kerfe – I too was not fully aware of the Daphne link even though a keen gardener – very fragrant
great prompt Laura and you packed yours to the brim. It should also mean Lovely
thank you – my granddaughter named after me as Lauren and I call her Lovely!

Excellent. I like this form too.
tha’ts encouraging – a form I did not find to be as easy as it appears at first
“enchantment sung to a haunting tune” I really like that! Very nicely worked, Laura~

I’m so heartened by your comment Andrew (and good to know the Frewin link) – hope you are enjoying a birthday today
You have a romantic name Laura and your words prove it. Delightful 🥰
I’ve tried to live up to it 😉thank you Christine
As always you show by example, Laura! No wonder you love gardening. It is believed here that our given name does have a bearing on our personality. 🙂
it does indeed shape us but I had forgotten the twinning with Daphne – thank you
Yes, that twinning I didn’t know. Daphne is a beautiful name. I had a friend called Daphne in school.
You are welcome.
That was Laura… and she’s only a dream la la la
yes!
Beautifully written, Laura. It is so interesting to read about the backstory of names. This was a great prompt, Laura.
