“Observe the cautious toadstools
still on the lawn today
though they grow over-evening;
sun shrinks them away.
Pale and proper and rootless,
they righteously extort
their living from the living.
I have been their sort….”
Sunday Sayings: An extract from W.D. Snodgrass’ “Song” to illustrate this toadstool photo

A metaphor for much that is going among the rich and the leaders right now.
ahh Paul let’s not scapegoat just the usual suspects – we are all guilty in our own way hence that last line
True, and I agree, all have fallen short – but the permission to live it openly and with pride has gone up a notch since said scapegoats have popularised it. Sigh.
no shame certainly – just the will to power but what bothers me is how so many of us ogle and admire that celeb rung of the ladder
Yes, I share that view, it bothers me too. I thought it was so obvious – but apparently not. Orwell and Huxley spoke to this in many ways (and many others too) and here it is.
I love the fact that poem and photo can spark so much – thank you Paul
Thank you Laura, you sparked my thoughts. And yes it is amazing.
Very pretty picture to accompany the lovely poem.
Did you have to crouch very close the ground or does your display allow for more comfortable non-crouching?
thank you Kiki and a great question because the answer is it was on a high up piece of ground I was walking past so no need to strain my old knees
Ah that’s what I should look out for then 🙂
