In this craft

To the “Clown in the Moon” ~ Dylan Thomas

I've wallowed.
In your wake, raked ashes
Grey and goose winged to a full plumed moon

Towering
Words you honed from old charms
The lapsed scent of sweet raisins in snow

Magical
Melodies you intoned
Singing the sands on that bare foreshore

I have drenched
My ears in your echoes
Clamour of gulls and the sabbath bell

  1. Ah, Dylan Thomas, one of my favourite poets, Dora, and thank you for introducing me to a new form. I was immediately hooked by the sensual imagery  in your poem: the ‘raked ashes / Grey and goose winged to a full plumed moon’; the ‘lapsed scent of sweet raisins in snow’; and those ‘magical melodies’, ‘clamour of gulls and the sabbath bell’.

  2. This is exquisite writing, Laura! Wow! I especially admire “the lapsed scent of sweet raisins in snow.” ❤️❤️

  3. Laura, I just went out to read Thomas’ poem after reading yours. I feel a soul connection between the two. My heart aches to read his, and to wish he knew your admiration and was touched without the world crumbling. What a duet between you and him.

    1. ahh Lisa – so glad you followed through to his ‘craft or sullen art’ – and thank you for the prompt which gave me the chance to duet with DT albeit from the wings of his great stage

  4. A beautiful poem, Laura!! The form, use of metaphors that appeal to senses of sight, sound, touch ~ your poem resonated deeply.

  5. Like Saul Bellow said, a writer is a reader moved to emulation … great offering to Dylan’s ghost here.

    1. thanks for that quote Brendan as I feel we have become a bit precious these days regarding plagiarism and over-extending the definition to where it does not apply
