York is a historic town in Yorkshire famous for its Roman walls, Gothic Minster, timber and plaster buildings, winding cobbled streets and Viking history. Our Catholic anti-government rebel, Guy Fawkes, was born and educated here.

I did not bother to photograph York Minster as selfie taking tourists and gowned graduates inundated the facades. However, tucked behind the Minster is the Treasurer’s House. A late 16th century edifice bought by Frank Green in 1890, the grandson of a wealthy industrialist, and transformed into this elaborately decorated town house, ready for the visit of King Edward VII.

York is a labyrinth of side streets and alleyways. each as tantalising as the next and pulling in the curious to wonder just what is round each bend. But like any town, it has kept up with modern times as here in the shopping centre of Coppergate.

And yes it did rain for a couple of hours making these ‘Pride brollies’ even more appropriate especially as seen in monochrome
With time on our hands before the return train, we visited a nearby pub but I should stress that the camera blur was due to low light rather than inebriation. I liked the effect all the same.

Postscript: Its impossible to appreciate York in less than 2 days so I shall return later on in the year and this time with fresh camera batteries that hold their charge!
