Surely one of the most outstanding features of Ernst Haas’ photography is the colour vision that he brings to street photography. Not the kaleidoscopic as much as selectivity and contrast.
“Beware of color theories. Theories in color photography are dangerous. The plain fact that there are so many of them proves my point. A color philosophy comes much closer to the truth..”. ~ Ernst Haas
London is jam-packed full of pedestrians but even in the central parts they can be found in fewer and fewer numbers. These are the back streets. I call them rat runs and they allow those of us in the know to move around more unhurriedly, at our chosen pace. Ideal too for novices like me who are inspired by the street photography of Ernst Haas and need time and space to develop an eye for colour, and its placements.

“Colour is Joy. One does not think Joy, one is carried by it” ~ Ernst Haas

“Take color as a totality of relations within a frame. Don’t ever overanalyse your results! ” ~ Ernst Haas

“To translate a world of color into black and white is much easier than to overcome the color, which so often runs contrary to its subject matter” ~ Ernst Haas.

“The best pictures differentiate themselves by nuances… a tiny relationship – either a harmony or a disharmony – that creates a picture” ~ Ernst Haas

“Without a descriptive caption to justify its existence, it will speak for itself – less descriptive, more creative; less informative, more suggestive; less prose, more poetry” ~ Ernst Haas
