“Imagine for a moment
the still life of our meals,
meat followed by yellow cheese,
grapes pale against the blue armor of fish….”
Carol Muske-Dukes
I looked up from my task and for a few blinks of an eye, there appeared a chiaroscuro painting – light and shadow concocting some magic onto the corner table, devoid of all but a white cotton cloth and a small yellow pot.
Quickly photographed as seen, it captures the essence of still life which is:
“a celebration of material pleasures such as food and wine, or often a warning of the ephemerality of these pleasures and of the brevity of human life i.e. memento mori (Tate – Still Life)
Yes the table is empty and the cloth might even resemble a shroud but it can also indicate a meal cleared away with all the gastronomic delights still on the tongue. And long before the symbolisms can be mulled over, the play of light and dark is held frozen in this most ordinary of moments.
Note: Back in 20-15-16 the PhoTrablogger hosted a Mundane Monday theme – I’m reviving it as a resolution for 2026 in order to help sharpen both my camera and artist eye Watch this space!!
