…and nothing else. After reading John Lewis-Stempel’s “The Running Hare” (an environmentalist’s account of field restoration) I always keep a look and listen-out for wildlife in agricultural acreages. This one was devoid of wildflowers, no birds sang, a desultory crow flew over but one yellowhammer or possibly a bunting flew up before my oncoming footsteps. This rarish sight was meagre compensation for the empty ecosystem of the growing crop.
