the poetry book agape and Sister Agnes speaking in tongues
closer to God. Distant as the nearest star
she stood on a moon, reflected out of bright blue skies
think of a summer's day by all means
a long escape ladder for the elephant trap
hammered two feet down in earth
to the other side, to those who have passed over
well-worn walking sticks in hand
and so they push up inquisitively after the daffs
alongside her lost-and-found dirge
setting sail for consciousness
in this oven of a high summer noon
like struggling kites, each lifts and falls
over the heads of Calla lilies
colours running down, bleed into the street.
For this last Open Link Night of 2024 where anything goes, some consecutive ‘found’ lines, including title, from 16 poems of mine (2018-19), that I’ve selected so far for a self-published book.
With much appreciation to fellow poets at dVerse who inspire with poetry prompts, styles and a great deal of support. And many thanks to all readers who stop by with such encouraging feedback.
Imagery created in those last 7 lines is, to me, truly excellent!
thank you Lillian – found poetry can sometimes work well!
I love the thought of a summer walk at the moment… maybe mulled wine will help
indeed
Your ruminations complement each other well.
many thanks Ken – they were plucked consecutively from very different sources so that’s good to hear
Laura, I am surprised these are from separate poems; they meld well together. Congrats on the book. Is there a link to buy it?
it’s in the making still Lisa – thanks for asking and for such appreciative words x
You’ve done at least one cento prompt for a year’s poems before. You have inspired me to do one for 2024.
yes I did two – last lines and first lines so this time it was a random line pick across the poems I’m collating – your 2024 idea is a great way of rounding up the year
You made this seem effortless, though I doubt it was. I am fascinated with your line choices and how you created something Brand New.
not so much effortless Helen as created with minimum thinking so thank you
I continue to be blown away by the poems I’ve read tonight, and inspired to try the many different forms I’ve seen, including this found poem from among your treasure chest. This is a multi-faceted jewel!
your comment is spot on – we share poetry with some very talented poets. Thank you for the ‘multifaced jewel’ comment – its a great description of found poetry
I love creating poems fro found lines, especially from our own poems, and your ruminations mulled like wine for meanings are an inspiration to create some more, Laura. I especially love the final lines.
thank you Kim – there are always slivers of gold to be mined!
Laura, reading this makes my synapses fizz. Verbal alchemy!
many thanks for fizzing Tish and making me smile on this damp dull morning
Gosh, and it is so very dank and dull.
A fabulous poem, Laura
many thanks Roberta and for all your kind comments
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous poem Laura! Wow! 😍😍
love love love the emphasis – thank you Sanaa 🫶
I just went to a funeral and this really fits. It brought me there but also took me to unexpected places.
not as dark a that though
Like mulled wine, this goes smoothly and had you not mentioned these are found lines, it had touched of that lovely surreal poem you wrote a while ago. Always learning something from you. Happy holidays, Laura.
*touches and not touched
yes indeed – ‘found poetry’ does have that surreal element as an amalgam of different sources can only every be tangentially connected. Thank you for all your visits and inputs – enjoy the holidays until we gather our Muses back in January
My pleasure, Laura. Happy holidays and see you in January.
thank you 🙏
