there is an interest in what is hidden…[it] can take the form of a fairly intense feeling, a sort of struggle…
Hidden from permission
and just within reach.
The utmost fascination
- for them, an apple for eyes
first man, first woman
fingered the fruit. To taste
to feel, to know, differences
right and wrong , he and she
enough lore to leave the garden
under clouds of earthen grey
Aeons later the Son of Man
comes there too, stationary
a volunteer from the garden
He replays the scene, closer still
to eye, to mouth, to surrender
and still his arms remain inert.
Inside a plain grey suit
hides where a spear pierced
where nails hung hands
and we know there was a struggle
a momentary cry to abdicate
until inclined to yield.

For Mish’s Open Link Night and her optional prompt of the painter René Magritte’s ‘Son of Man’ along with a quote from him, as in the epigraph.
I love where painting and epigraph took you, Laura, very appealing. I especially love these lines:
‘to feel, to know, differences
right and wrong , he and she
enough lore to leave the garden
under clouds of earthen grey’.
the title of the painting was a certainty for the poem’s direction so thank you
Wow. I am in awe of the way you translated the details of Magritte’s painting into such fitting representations.
thank you Mish and for hosting this one- the quote really helped too
Your linking of the apple in this painting to the Garden of Eden is fascinating.
