another Black Friday

“The dark nails pierce him and the sky turns black,
And love is firmly fastened onto loss”

Hurry! Hurry!
hurry for the sales are happening here today
a rollicking rush on knock-down goods
discounts dispensed by the dozen
another Black Friday’s godforsaken goodness
Holy! Holy!
holiness made mockery of man
the profane precedent is ever present
casting lots for humble garments
dispensed before the flesh was cold

*Opening lines from Malcolm Guite’s ‘Good Friday” – read and listen to his twelve stations of the cross  –  taken from ‘Sounding the Seasons; seventy Sonnets for the Christian Year (2012)′
