Thoughts

Poetry heals the wounds inflicted by reason.
Novalis

I think our thoughts
are sparkles in black velvet
some sequin sewn but others
long gone stars, sky fallen,
their flares, registered as instant

Before the scopes that pry both near and far
there’s magic, as only imagining makes

Reason has set the dominos tumbling
excites, electrifies cognizance
urbane, profound, subliminal
(or devilish thoughts that slipstream
like eels into colder, deeper waters)
All are visible to the logical eye
the analyst’s couch, the cognitive doctoring
mind over matter

God make me pagan again!
untie me from these factual tracks
let me flounder again for the faith
that seeks the light that sparks the synapse

  1. This is incredibly gorgeous writing, Laura! 😍 I especially love this part; “there’s magic, as only imagining makes/Reason has set the dominos tumbling excites, electrifies cognizance/urbane, profound, subliminal (or devilish thoughts that slipstream/like eels into colder, deeper waters).” 🩷🩷

You are right, the poem does indeed compliment the mini prompt! xx

  2. A stunning poem, Laura, rich with imagery. I love the opening stanza, the thoughts as ‘sparkles in black velvet’ and ‘long gone stars’, and the prayer for ‘faith that seeks the light that sparks the synapse’ in the final stanza, which all resonates with me.

  3. You have described the pattern of thoughts beautifully with your imagery. I really liked these lines…

    some sequin sewn but others
    long gone stars, sky fallen,
    their flares, registered as instant

  4. The difference in “seeing” with reason or imagination resonates powerfully, effectively, so much so that persona’s cry at the end seems the “logical” conclusion to revive “the faith/that seeks the light that sparks the synapse.” Thoughts so beautifully conveyed, Laura.
