Tenderness should never be torn
although you ripped though my letters
as if full of flimsy
Strong bonds are not easily broken
unlike the strings of your guitar
those nights we harmonized
Devotion cannot vanish, all of a sudden
the way you puddle-jumped your way
out of my life that night
With my tears not even hidden
in the rain, mascara run
without your umbrella
I recall how your love kept me
full of hunger, subsisting on thin mouthfuls
from those impetuous feasts
You and I are omitted, lost in the spaces
an in-between of many treasured memories

For Sanaa’s OLN prompt where anything goes as long as it’s poetry. For added inspiration she offered us a quote from Edna St Vincent Millay: “Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink nor slumber nor a roof against the rain.” as well as this Photo: ‘Moody urban night scene with umbrella’ by Josh Hild, Pexels.
Love the way you used negation to put substance on what that devotion really is…
using negative to be negative!
I love where the image took you, Laura, the way you captured the moodiness, and the amazing opening lines that hooked me, especially ‘ripped through my letters as if full of flimsy ‘. I also love ‘puddle-jumped your way out of my life’ and the final couplet,
thank you Kim for so much likes
My pleasure, Laura.
I found the last two lines very poignant. Something to reflect on in my current situation.
thank you – a pause for thought perhaps!
The imagery and the mood within the poem really gripped me and the ending is perfect.
thank you for your appreciation
You welcome, Laura. 🙂
Without the love umbrella, what else can one do but puddle-jump away, eh?
Awesome write, LB
thank you Ron – yes the love umbrella is what’s needed
It would be interesting to see how the cross-currents from both sides take shape. (K)
might be interesting to do a response poem then
Yes, I think it would.
Full of memorable lines, Laura – so poignant…
thank you Andrew –
let me try again to see if this gets posted this time.
I like the juxtaposition of opposites here. It highlighted the tension and other emotions, e.g., disappointment, in this piece. To me, Stanzas 4 and 5 illustrate the dramatic tension very well.
many thanks for taking the time for your well-considered feedback
“puddle-jumped your way out of my life”

ahh Gillena – thank you ❤
“Tenderness should never be torn.”
Oh, the pain that can happen when we risk ourselves.
so true Ali
A beautifully sad reflection, Laura. Such great images throughout.
I really appreciate those words Dwight

This is the perfect poem for that picture, and I could feel the mascara running as a result of the puddle-jumping.
